A man has been charged in connection with a road rage shooting in Anchorage that left a 19-year-old father shot five times earlier this month, according to court records.

filed Thursday charge Joseph Semisi Lemalie, 24, with first-degree assault and first-degree weapons misconduct, among other counts, stemming from a shooting reported May 13 near the intersection of Lake Otis Parkway and Northern Lights Boulevard.

Anchorage police previously said patrol officers responded about 9:30 p.m. May 13 to reports of a shooting in the Lake Otis and Northern Lights area. Officers found an adult male, later identified as McKial McCarty, with gunshot wounds who was taken to a hospital for treatment. McCarty said he was driving home from work at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport when another driver pulled into his lane while turning, nearly causing a collision.

He said he honked, and the other driver rolled down a window and fired multiple shots.

“He just lets every round out,” McCarty said in a previous interview with Alaska’s News Source, adding that five bullets hit him. His mother, Elizabeth Petrivelli, said a bystander’s son held pressure on McCarty’s wounds until medics arrived, which she said helped save his life. Prosecutors allege Lemalie recklessly caused serious physical injury to another person by means of a dangerous instrument, a charge of first-degree assault under Alaska law. The filing also charges Lemalie with first-degree weapons misconduct.

Prosecutors allege Lemalie discharged a firearm from a propelled vehicle while the vehicle was being operated under circumstances that created a substantial risk of physical injury to a person or damage to property. Additional counts listed in the May 28 filing include two counts of second-degree assault, one count of third-degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment.filed May 20, an Anchorage Police Officer Hadley wrote that investigators reviewed traffic camera footage showing McCarty’s vehicle turning north onto Lake Otis from Northern Lights.

Hadley wrote that a small white SUV — believed to be a Chevrolet Equinox — made a wide turn and nearly collided with McCarty’s vehicle before the shooting occurred north of the intersection. The complaint said officers later found a vehicle matching the description — a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox — parked at a residence on West 32nd Avenue. The vehicle was registered to Lemalie, according to the complaint.

While photographing the vehicle, an officer found four spent shell casings near the windshield wipers, the complaint said. Investigators also found multiple shell casings at the shooting scene and described bullet impact marks on McCarty’s vehicle. The complaint said McCarty identified Lemalie in a photo lineup on May 14 while McCarty was hospitalized. The officer wrote that McCarty selected Lemalie immediately and said he was “1000% sure.

” Police wrote that McCarty described the gun as silver and “looked like a Glock,” and told officers he believed the suspect vehicle continued north on Lake Otis after the shooting.
