) - Bond has been set for a George County man and woman accused in a case involving the physical and sexual abuse of two children, authorities said.
Kenneth Newburn was granted a $150,000 bond for each of five counts of sexual battery and a $50,000 bond for one count of grooming, the sheriff’s office said. He is also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Rita Newburn was granted a $100,000 bond for each of two counts of child abuse, the sheriff’s office said.
The investigation began on May 12 when the George County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division received a referral from Child Protective Services about allegations of physical and sexual abuse of two minors. Investigators identified the Newburns as suspects. The Newburns were arrested Thursday and booked into the George County Regional Correctional Facility.
