A new study from Sweden suggests that semaglutide and liraglutide, commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, reduce the risk of AUD-related hospitalizations more effectively than traditional AUD medications.
A new study indicates that users of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists semaglutide and liraglutide have a significantly lower risk of being hospitalized due to alcohol use disorder (AUD) compared to those using traditional AUD medications. The research, conducted from 2006 to 2023 in Sweden and involving over 220,000 individuals with AUD, revealed that semaglutide users showed the lowest risk for AUD-related hospitalization (adjusted hazard ratio 0.64; 95% CI, 0.50-0.
83), followed by liraglutide users (aHR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.57-0.92). The findings also suggest that these GLP-1 receptor agonists may be effective in reducing hospitalizations due to somatic conditions, though no significant association was found with suicide attempts
