Refugee families arriving in Lakewood are often in need.

Horace Mann Elementary School teacher donating bikes to refugee students. LAKEWOOD , Ohio -- Refugee families arriving in Lakewood are often in need. It was this realization that led Horace Mann Elementary School EL Individual Small Group Instructor Stacey Lueck to help students assimilate into the school community.

“They don’t come with a lot. It was two years ago, one of the new kiddos in my son’s class was such a hard worker and really great kid. His birthday was in December, so we decided we wanted to get him something.”The teacher contacted a social media group of Lakewood residents who share or donate items they no longer need. From there, a used bike was donated and passed on to the fifth-grader“It was kind of awesome and something that was easy to do and doesn’t require a lot of extra work, but really makes a big difference for some of these kiddos.” From there, the donation effort grew with Lueck over the last two years, donating roughly a dozen used bikes. “We clean them up and through the district’s Safe Route To Schools grant, we also give them a brand-new helmet and send them on their way,” she said. “They just love it. “It brings them a little freedom and a way to get a little childhood back. It’s a way to connect with their peers and socialize outside of school.” Prior to donating a bike, Lueck said she checks with the parents, who are also responsible for getting the two-wheeled donation home.“I had a little fourth-grader who, after being showed her the bike towards the end of the school day, told her teacher, ‘I have a bike, and I’m gonna ride a bike home.’ It’s just so heartwarming. It’s easy and it makes a difference.”“People in the community love to know things they’re no longer using are going to a new home and making a difference,” she said.
