Impaired and texting drivers should think twice about getting behind the wheel in Parma.

Parma police department. PARMA , Ohio -- Impaired and texting drivers should think twice about getting behind the wheel in Parma . The police department recently received numerous grants that in 2026 will be used to identify and arrest intoxicated and distracted drivers.

Parma Police Capt. David Zarzeczny noted the department previously received the same grant in 2019, 2020 and 2021.“The main purpose of the IDEP/STEP grant is basically to help law enforcement agencies conduct targeted traffic safety enforcement efforts aimed at reducing fatalities and serious injuries resulting from impaired driving, speeding and a lack of seatbelt use,” he said. “I would also add to that distracted driving, which is prevalent and can be very hazardous to any motorist on the roadway.” The grant covers department overtime manhours for targeted dates such as Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, a high school prom, the Fourth of July and Halloween. A component of the STEP grant also covers the Click It Or Ticket initiative, which puts more officers on the road during school events and holidays. “Click It or Ticket specifies blitz days in April and May of this year,” Parma Police Sgt. David D’Eusanio said. Parma Police Chief Kevin Riley said the awarded grants provide his department the opportunity to increase operational capability. “Traffic enforcement has always been the tip of the spear, so speak, keeping the city safe,” he said.
