A family in Maple Heights, Ohio is grappling with devastation after their beloved pit bull, Chino, was shot by a local police officer. Chino is currently battling for his life at the Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital, his owner, Marquita Watford, expressing her anguish and uncertainty about his survival. The incident unfolded Thursday morning when Watford, after letting Chino out into the yard, stepped into the shower.
She was startled by frantic knocking at the door, followed by Chino's screams and the sound of gunshots. Rushing to the door, she found Chino bleeding profusely. According to Watford, Chino had never been aggressive and she had a restraining order against her neighbor who had reported him as aggressive and loose.Watford claims her neighbor has harbored animosity towards her dog since its arrival, constantly seeking to provoke trouble. Surveillance footage from a neighboring house captures the officer's initial arrival and interaction with Watford's neighbor. It then shows the officer proceeding to Watford's door and ultimately entering her driveway, where Chino was located. Moments later, three gunshots ring out. Police allege that Chino exhibited aggressive behavior, puffing his chest and lunging towards the officer twice. They claim that the officer, after issuing warnings and attempts to de-escalate the situation, ultimately shot Chino when he perceived an immediate threat. However, Watford disputes this account, stating the officer never explicitly communicated Chino's aggressive intent and only mentioned feeling threatened. Chino sustained gunshot wounds to his paws, leg, and stomach, requiring emergency surgery to increase his chances of survival. Watford's sister has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Chino's medical expenses. As the investigation into the shooting continues, 19 News has requested body camera footage from the Maple Heights Police Department. The public awaits further information and clarity on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident
