he Alaska Department of Transportation is working on clearing priority sidewalks following January’s record-breaking snowfall.
Priority one areas on their list include roads like Tudor Road where the state sees a high volume of pedestrians. “They have been sarcastically lovely,” Antwan Koby Beaver Barr, an Anchorage resident, said.
“It feels like sand, like very fine sand.” Crews were out working all night, as the DOT turned its attention to clearing major routes on Wednesday. On Tuesday, crews began clearing routes, such as Muldoon, Tudor and parts of Northern Lights. The DOT said it is aiming to wrap up those roads on Wednesday and will begin moving onto other priority areas. “Those are going to be kind of the local connector roads, particularly up on the hillside,” Justin Shelby, with the DOT, said. While also tackling major routes, Shelby said that the department has also started clearing sidewalks of snow. This process he warns will take time, due to the immense snowfall seen in January. “We’ve got snow built up from earlier in the season,” Shelby said. “We’ve got to haul snow away in many areas around town before we can get those sidewalks fully open.” Unplowed sidewalks, some Anchorage residents told Alaska’s News Source, sometimes lead to them having to make the decision to use the street as a pathway. Beaver Barr asked that drivers give them space on the road, if they approach them, or slow down their speed. “They’re trying their best, to where we’re trying our best to avoid to be on the street but I know they got places to go to and but we do too.” For pedestrian traveling using the streets, Shelby is advising caution. He said that includes making sure that they are visible and are aware of traffic near them. “You’ve got icy conditions. It’s definitely a hazardous situation. And making sure that you’re able to be seen is of paramount importance,” Shelby said. The DOT did not have an exact answer on when sidewalks will be plowed. The DOT said moving snow can take several days to complete.
