The Dothan resident and former Providence Christian School standout won the PGA Tour Americas Qualifying Tournament last week at the Country Club of Ocala, Fla.
David Mundee After finishing his college golf career at the University of Alabama this spring, Thomas Ponder was similar to a college graduate looking for a new job., earning full status to this summer’s North America swing of the tour formerly known as the Canadian Tour for its final 10 events of the season, starting June 20.
He starts his “new journey” at The Beachlands Victoria Open June 20-23 in Victoria, British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, between Seattle and Vancouver. He also plans to play the following week at the ATB Classic in Strathcona County, Alberta, located just outside of Edmonton. “I don’t know what my schedule will exactly be like, but I definitely will do the first two events,” Ponder said.“I would really like to win one ,” Ponders said. “I have talked to a couple of golfers who played last year and they said that you really need to win one to guarantee you one of the spots at the end of the year from Canadian to go on the Korn Ferry Tour based on how the point system is set up. So, I am going in to try and win one and to play solid golf.
Ponder finished his Tide career with a 71.42 stroke average over 138 rounds, earning 23 top 20 finishes in 47 tournaments, including five in the top five. Of his 138 rounds, 78 were par or lower.
