A house fire in Eagle River, near the intersection of Skyline Drive and Roseberry Park Drive, left one person dead and another injured Monday, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

ANCHORAGE , Alaska - A house fire in Eagle River , near the intersection of Skyline Drive and Roseberry Park Drive, left one person dead and another injured Monday, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

Fire officials said a person who escaped the burning home called 911 around 3:01 p.m., reporting another occupant was trying to crawl out of the window and a third was trapped inside. Crews from multiple Anchorage fire stations responded, along with a safety officer and battalion chiefs. Officials said firefighters worked to put out the blaze despite the absence of a fire hydrant nearby. The fire continued to smolder and produce smoke for about three hours after the initial call for help. Firefighters recovered the remains of the deceased victim inside the home. The person who escaped through the window was taken to an Anchorage hospital, the AFD said. AFD officials are now encouraging the public to prepare their own escape plans in case of a house fire. “This is a great opportunity for people to actually look around their own homes and to make an escape plan,” said Megan Peters, AFD Public Information Officer. “How are you going to get out if there’s a fire? Where are you going to meet up with the other people in the home? Is there a designated place that you guys have already set? Practice and actually take the time to walk through.” Investigators are sifting through the ashes to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Preliminary findings show the home only had one smoke detector, which was broken, according to officials.Troopers kill armed man barricaded in Wasilla bathroomGirl found dead in Campbell Park residence, homicide investigation opened
