44-year-old Brandon Pechette is charged with felonious assault.
His brother told the I-TEAM Monday that he does not think the man was trying to hurt officers, but that he wanted to die in what’s known as suicide by cop, a situation that provokes officers to use deadly force.
His bail was set at $100,000. At a preliminary hearing May 28, the charge was dropped, with prosecutors opting to take the case to a grand jury. Pechette served six overseas deployments - three of them were to Afghanistan and two of them to Iraq. His brother told the I-TEAM his experiences while deployed combined with a debilitating physical ailment contributed to Sunday’s situation.
As Toledo police piece together everything that led up to an officer shooting Pechette, his family knows Brandon as a person struggling.
“He was not trying to hurt anybody. He had no intentions of actually hurting anyone,” said Neil Pechette, Brandon’s brother.
“He’s a great person who need some help. ” The combat veteran was at a home on Coral Avenue near Secor and Alexis Road Sunday morning when a 911 call was made saying someone had a gun and was going to shoot people. Brandon’s brother believes his brother made the call and brought officers there. When Brandon allegedly raised his weapon, police shot him.
“You add in parts of the paranoia from the disease and no sleep and it would probably make anyone go crazy. His intentions were to die by the police,” said Neil Pechette. , a neurological disorder affecting movement and thinking ability. With all of this, his brother is not upset with police but just sad all of this has gotten them here.
“Once I realized he got out with a weapon, I mean a completely understand,” said Neil Pechette. “It’s horrible. It hurts. The worst part is I can’t be there for him right now to help him.
