'The community was hard hit by multiple tornadoes'

Members of Ohio Task Force 1 searched for victims of tornadoes that broke out hours before Hurricane Milton made landfall in Siesta Key last week as a Category 3 storm.CINCINNATI - Ohio Task Force 1 is coming home after a record-long deployment in two states responding to Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

The 82-member specialized search and rescue team of first responders began their long drive to Ohio on Sunday and spent the night in northern Georgia. They are getting back on the road “first thing” Monday morning and expect to arrive at their Dayton-area warehouse around 5 p.m. Monday, according to their latest Facebook post.They worked in Pasco and Hernandez counties in the hours and days following Helene’s landfall along the Florida Gulf Coast. The team was called to North Carolina the following week, on Oct. 1, where the damage from Hurricane Helene was compounded by days of rain and mudslides isolated communities. The team worked in multiple counties surrounding Asheville using boats, search K-9s, and specialized equipment to search for missing people.Under the threat of another major hurricane last week, Ohio Task Force1 was transferred back to Florida on Oct. 7.Replacement team members were quickly dispatched and the task force was back to full staffing the following day and settled in Orlando to await Hurricane Milton’s landfall. Early in the evening of Oct. 9, tornados raced ahead of Hurricane Milton and struck Port Saint Lucie. Ohio Task Force 1 was scrambled to an area near Fort Pierce along the eastern coast where as many as 12 tornadoes were suspected.Ohio Task Force 1 assisted with search and rescue efforts before hunkering down as Hurricane Milton tore across the state.At first light the following day, the team returned to their mission, searching a once beautiful modular home community. One of the tornadoes tore through a retirement community, killing multiple residents and leaving a wide path of destruction. Ohio Task Force 1 worked to rescue trapped or hurt people, find missing ones and document structural damage.
