The constable was in critical condition early Wednesday after his vehicle was struck at a work site on I-35 near O'Connor Road, San Antonio police said.

An off-duty Bexar County deputy constable was critically injured when his vehicle was rear-ended by an Amazon tractor-trailer on the Northeast Side early Wednesday. Deputy constable Patrick Trevino , 62, was conducting a lane closure for a construction site at 3 a.

m. in the 10600 block of Interstate 35 North, near Crosswinds Way, according to a San Antonio police report. Trevino was identified Wednesday by Chief Deputy Salvador Rodriguez, with the Bexar County Constable’s Office for Precinct 1. Trevino was sitting in his SUV, which had police lights that were on, when he was struck from behind by an Amazon 18-wheeler, Rodriguez said. Precinct 1 Constable Ruben C. Tejeda “only asks for prayers and blessings for the deputy and his family,” Rodriguez said. Trevino has been with the precinct for more than 15 years as part of the constable’s support unit, officials said. The driver of the big rig was evaluated and found not to be intoxicated, San Antonio police said. The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
