BritBox, the streaming platform that offers the best television from across the pond, is set to add another highly anticipated series to its lineup. A Woman of Substance, an adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford's beloved novel, stars Brenda Blethyn in her return to TV after solving her last Northumberland crime in Vera. The series follows the rags-to-riches rise of working-class Emma Harte from impoverished maid to 1970s business mogul ruling the New York skyline.
From the upcoming spin-off of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice in The Other Bennet Sister and the brand-new British crime drama Gone, to long-running shows such as Shetland and Karen Pirie, BritBox is the place to be for the best television from across the pond.
Next month, the streamer adds yet another hotly anticipated series to its line-up, starring Brenda Blethyn in her return to TV after solving her last Northumberland crime in Vera. An adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford's beloved novel, A Woman of Substance is scheduled to hit BritBox on June 24, with Blethyn starring opposite Outlander's Jessica Reynolds, who will play a younger version of Blethyn's Emma Harte.
The series marks the second time Channel 4 has adapted the novel, with Deborah Kerr first portraying Emma Harte in 1985. I’m overjoyed to be taking on this iconic role, in the footsteps of the great Deborah Kerr, said Blethyn in a statement at the time of the show's announcement. The show's debut on BritBox follows its run on British screens, airing earlier this year in March and April on Channel 4.
Already, the series has earned plenty of critical praise, including an impressive 89% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of the praise is being awarded to the central performances, with one critic describing Blethyn as magnetic, and another saying that Scanlan truly steals the show. Following Collider's exclusive image of the upcoming series earlier this month, the official trailer for A Woman of Substance has finally landed and is available to view below.
A synopsis for the series reads: Charts the rags-to-riches rise of working-class Emma Harte from impoverished maid in early 1900s Yorkshire to 1970s business mogul ruling the New York skyline. COLLIDE
