Spider-Man: Noir's showrunner, Oren Uziel, reveals the creative strategy behind the series' surprising villain choices, opting for more obscure antagonists to fit the 1930s noir setting.
Spider-Man: Noir 's showrunner, Oren Uziel , recently shed light on the series' unconventional villain choices. The Prime Video series, set in 1930s New York City and starring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a private detective, eschews the iconic foes typically associated with Spider-Man in favor of more obscure antagonists.
Uziel explained that the primary goal was to select characters that organically fit into the noir setting. He and co-showrunner Steve Lightfoot first focused on crafting the story they wanted to tell, with the villain selection process being guided by the story-first approach. Uziel described the decision as finding 'who can we put in opposition to Ben Reilly?
' He also noted that the vast Marvel catalog provided a unique creative opportunity to put their own spin on well-known characters or build up lesser-known ones. The series features Jack Huston as Sandman, Abraham Popoola as Tombstone, and Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane, who now has Irish roots instead of Italian origins. Andrew Lewis Caldwell's Megawatt also makes his on-screen debut as a straightforward robber.
Uziel's roster of villains may also hint at a future Sinister Six lineup, with characters like Hammerhead and The Enforcers potentially complementing the noir tone and comedic elements of the show
