Lionsgate has announced a June 4, 2027 theatrical release for John Rambo, a prequel to the action franchise with Noah Centineo replacing Sylvester Stallone as the title character. The film faces a crowded summer schedule and features a new creative team while Stallone serves as a producer.
Lionsgate has officially announced the release date for the upcoming Rambo prequel titled John Rambo. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 4, 2027.
This places it among a crowded summer slate, with Ryan Gosling's Star Wars: Starfighter opening the week before on May 28, 2027. The two weeks following John Rambo will see the releases of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 on June 11 and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on June 18, 2027. Another Paramount Pictures film is also slated for the June 4 date, though its title remains undisclosed.
Notably, this prequel marks the first time the character of John Rambo will be portrayed by an actor other than Sylvester Stallone, with Noah Centineo cast in the lead role. Centineo, known for his part as Peter Kavinsky in Netflix's To All the Boys trilogy, has an extensive filmography that includes Austin & Ally, The Fosters, Charlie's Angels, Black Adam, and the forthcoming Street Fighter adaptation.
The film's supporting cast features Yao, Quincy Isaiah, Jason Tobin, Tayme Thapthimthong, and Jefferson White. Jalmari Helander, director and writer of Sisu and its sequel Sisu: Road to Revenge, is directing John Rambo from a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. While Sylvester Stallone will not be on screen, he remains involved as a producer alongside the Russo Brothers, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, Amanda Presmyk, Kevin King Templeton, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Michael Disco, and Angela Russo-Otstot.
The Rambo franchise originated with 1982's First Blood, an adaptation of David Morrell's 1972 novel. It introduced Stallone as a Vietnam veteran who battles local authorities in the town of Hope, Washington. The original was a major success, grossing $125 million. Its sequel, Rambo: First Blood Part II, outperformed it with $300 million worldwide, followed by Rambo III in 1988, which earned $189 million.
All three early films were co-written by Stallone. After a two-decade hiatus, Lionsgate revived the series with 2008's Rambo, which Stallone wrote and directed, grossing $113 million. The franchise concluded with Stallone's final performance in 2019's Rambo: Last Stand, co-written with Matthew Cirulnick, which made $91 million. The new prequel, starring Centineo, now aims to reinvigorate the long-running series for a new generation.
Additional details about the production are expected to be revealed in the coming months as the 2027 release approaches
