Blood Test Detects Over 50 Cancers Early, Could Save Tens of Thousands of Lives in the UK

A large NHS trial shows the Galleri multi‑cancer blood test identifies tumors months before symptoms, cutting late‑stage diagnoses and potentially preventing up to 30,000 deaths annually.

A groundbreaking blood test that can identify more than 50 types of cancer before any symptoms appear may prevent tens of thousands of deaths each year, according to new research.

The NHS‑backed Galleri test, described by experts as a potential "Holy Grail" of oncology, was shown to detect four times as many cancers when used alongside existing screening programmes. In practical terms the findings suggest that one in five late‑stage diagnoses could be avoided, a factor that currently contributes to roughly 170,000 cancer deaths annually in the United Kingdom.

Doctors involved in the study say the impact on survival could be massive, estimating that up to 30,000 lives might be saved every year if the test is rolled out nationally. The test, developed by the American biotechnology company Grail, works by analysing tiny fragments of tumour DNA that circulate in the bloodstream. These fragments, known as circulating tumor DNA, act as a molecular "signal" that can be picked up months or even years before a tumour becomes clinically evident.

The NHS trial, which began in 2021, screened more than 142,000 adults aged 50 to 77. Across three rounds of testing, roughly one in one hundred participants received a positive result, and in 52 per cent of those cases cancer was later confirmed. Notably, the trial recorded a 25 per cent reduction in cancers first identified in emergency departments, where patients are typically already severely ill and prognosis is poor.

The shift away from emergency detection alone could dramatically improve outcomes for thousands of patients. Presenting the data ahead of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting, Sir Harpal Kumar, Chief Scientific Officer of Global Clinical and Medical Affairs at Grail, called the results "extremely important" and highlighted the test's potential to move cancer care from reactive to proactive treatment.

He noted that Galleri could also lower the number of false‑positive results generated by current programmes that focus on breast, bowel and cervical cancers. In the UK, about three million people are referred for urgent investigations each year based on vague symptoms, yet only six per cent receive a cancer diagnosis, exposing many to unnecessary invasive procedures and anxiety. A more predictive test could redirect diagnostic resources toward those who would benefit most.

The study also revealed striking reductions in late‑stage diagnoses for cancers without established screening pathways, such as oesophageal, pancreatic, ovarian, liver and bladder tumours. Stage‑four oesophageal cancer detections fell by more than 57 per cent, and stage‑four bowel cancer by over a third, while detection of stage‑three disease rose, offering patients a significantly better chance of five‑year survival.

These results suggest that multi‑cancer blood screening could become a cornerstone of the UK's cancer strategy, helping to narrow the survival gap with other nations that already enjoy earlier diagnoses
