Austin Wells is planning to spend much of this winter at the Yankees' facility in Tampa to get a head start on spring training, looking ahead to his first full season in the big leagues.“I think there needs to be a level of urgency and understanding,” Judge said. “Just because you get to the big leagues, just because you get to New York, you still got to improve and make adjustments. That’s what I think these next four weeks will help these guys figure out and get them on the right path.

Behind the plate, Wells has work to do with controlling the running game, throwing out only three of the 20 base runners that attempted to steal against him. Still, he used an elite exchange time and improving arm strength to produce a respectable 1.91 pop time, tied with Orioles phenom Adley Rutschman for the 15th-best mark among all big-league catchers.

“I think the most eye opening is that it’s the same game,” Wells said. “Nothing’s really different except for the fact that there are guys who have played here for 10 years that you’re facing on a daily basis. Getting that experience, playing against guys like that who are very smart baseball players and are trying to find any advantage they can to get you out I think that’s something that I’m looking forward to continuing to work against and trying to play that mind game with them.
