The world's largest pumped hydro storage facility being built in China reached major milestones in its construction journey over the weekend.
The world’s largest hybrid pumped hydro storage facility, being built at the Lianghekou Dam in China , has reached a major construction milestone. Excavation for the project’s ‘power heart’ has been completed, while downstream reservoir construction has also begun, a media report said.
As the supply of renewable energy from wind and solar power plants increases, countries are also working to develop efficient energy storage solutions to store excess power generated by these facilities when demand is low. Lithium-ion batteries have high energy density but are expensive to scale, prompting the use of innovative solutions. Interesting Engineering has previously reported how commonly available materials like sand are being used to store heat. However, when it comes to storing electricity, pumped hydro-storage is rapidly becoming a preferred option. Why pumped hydro storage worksPumped hydro storage works by converting excess renewable energy into potential energy by pumping water from a lower to a higher reservoir. During high energy demand, water from the higher elevation reservoir is allowed to flow downhill through turbines that generate electricity. Pumped hydro storage differs from conventional hydropower plants because water storage is designed to be reused, enabling year-round operation. In conventional hydropower plants, water only flowed downhill, leading to a stoppage of energy generation during periods of water scarcity. Pumped hydro storage can be used to balance the grid and tide over the intermittency of renewable power plants. Stored water works as a battery that can be charged and discharged as required. However, these projects take years of planning and execution before they can be deployed for real-world applications. This is why building the world’s largest such facility is an achievement in itself, and the project in China has completed major milestones. World’s largest pumped storage facilityBuilt at an elevation of 9,842 feet in the Western Sichuan plateau, the world’s largest hybrid pumped storage facility consists of four units of 300 megawatts each. The project consists of two reservoirs: the Lianghekou Reservoir, which also hosts a conventional hydropower plant and serves as the upper reservoir for a pumped-storage facility. The lower reservoir is being built near the Yagen Level-1 Hydropower Station. At the core of the project is the underground power house, also known as the ‘power heart’, which is built nearly 1,640 feet beneath the mountain. The powerhouse structure is nearly 656 feet long and nearly 200 feet high, and the burial depth extends to a little over 2,100 feet . Over the weekend, the project completed the excavation for the underground powerhouse, while concrete pouring for the lower reservoir also began. When completed, the pumped hydro storage, along with the conventional 3,000 MW of the Lianghekou project, will have a combined capacity of 4.2 GW, making it the world’s largest hybrid pumped hydro storage system in the world. This will ensure that the facility can provide both runoff and bidirectional power generation in the future. The pumped hydro facility is designed to absorb green energy from the 7 GW of renewable energy plants being built on the plateau, making it the ‘super power bank’ of the region.
