Harry Turtledove's Worldwar and Colonization books are a sci-fi saga that mashes together the World War II action of Saving Private Ryan and the alien invasion plot of War of the Worlds. Across eight sprawling novels, Turtledove earns his reputation as"the Master of Alternate History" by asking the ultimate WWII"what if?" Author Harry Turtledove knows real history so well that his breaks from it feel realistic. He operates from a solid understanding of how, say, Stalin's Soviet Union would respond to an invasion by conquering lizards from space. The same goes for Hitler's Germany, Churchill's Britain, and the U.S. under Franklin Roosevelt. And while each side in World War II turns its attention to fighting the new extraterrestrial threat, the tensions between them don't suddenly evaporate. The Worldwar series resists plot shortcuts. Its world powers don't ultimately unite in the face of their common threat. The "Worldwar" And "Colonization" Books Play The Long Game With Their Reinvention Of 20th-Century History The Colonization Series: Second Contact ; Down To Earth ; Aftershocks ; 2004's Homeward Bound Completes The Saga Worldwar ends with the fight between humanity and the Race at a standstill, with Earth half-occupied. The Colonization books pick up a generation later in the 1960s. A ripple effect of this is that the Allied and Axis powers from WWII have been largely preserved, including Nazi Germany. It's choices like this that make the novels great alternate history. In Worldwar, Harry Turtledove cleaves his version of history from the facts. By the end, he establishes a new political paradigm for Earth, and in Colonization he explores that in more detail. As the books progress, the Race also undergoes radical, unexpected changes as a result of its détente with human civilization. The 2004 standalone novel Homeward Bound completes the saga that started with In the Balance. The book covers from the '70s up to 2031, in which humanity develops faster-the-light travel and turns the tables on the Race, sending ships to their homeworld. Turtledove's Worldwar and Colonization novels have action, sex, political intrigue, and everything that makes for great drama.
