AI lipstick application device blends precision robotics and computer vision to simplify personal grooming for individuals with disabilities.
Brazilian multinational cosmetics leader Grupo Boticário has significantly advanced inclusivity in the beauty industry by introducing automation to personal grooming for individuals with disabilities and motor limitations.
Recognized as one of the largest beauty groups, the company developed an AI-powered Smart Lipstick application system designed to enhance accessibility and positively impact countless lives.Currently, in the prototype phase, the Smart Lipstick device leverages artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics to offer a fully automated, precise lipstick application, simplifying beauty routines for users. This innovative solution results from an extensive seven-year R&D collaboration between Grupo Boticário and CESAR Innovation Hub, reflecting a meaningful commitment to accessible beauty.Tech behind the prototype lipstick application systemThe automatic lipstick application system prototype features a sleek, glossy black design with an ergonomic chin platform, similar to eye examination machines in optical clinics. Users place their chin on the platform, and the device handles the rest automatically.Activated through simple button commands, the system employs a mechanical arm just beyond the chin platform, completing the lipstick application process in approximately two minutes. The dexterous arm also aims to replicate a soft human touch. Utilizing advanced computer vision, the device captures facial images to map lips and differentiate lip tones from facial colors accurately. The robotic arm then applies lipstick precisely, followed by a verification photograph to confirm a correct and uniform application.Milene Haraguchi Padilha, product innovation R&D expert at Grupo Boticário, said that they chose lipstick because it is often the first product people buy when they think about color cosmetics in an interview with AP at CES 2025. Product philosophy, collaboration, and motive The technology has already been successfully implemented in select showcase stores and events across Brazil. Milene Padilha asserts, “Our new prototype Smart Lipstick represents a paradigm shift in how we approach beauty and inclusivity.”Highlighting the effort and motivation behind the product, she adds, “Our large R&D team of 42 professionals, including engineers, product designers, UX experts, and diversity specialists, worked tirelessly for seven years to create technology that not only applies makeup flawlessly but empowers people with disabilities to experience the joy and confidence that comes with applying and wearing lipstick independently.”AI expert Giordano Cabral, who is also Chairman of the Board for CESAR, states, “This longtime collaboration between CESAR and Grupo Boticário demonstrates how advanced technology can break down barriers in unexpected ways.”He lauds the teamwork by saying, “Combining our expertise in AI and computer vision with Grupo Boticário’s deep understanding of beauty and inclusion, we’ve created a first-of-its-kind solution that goes beyond mere functionality – it promotes more autonomy during daily routines and the ability to express oneself freely, considering specific needs and preferences.”Recent industry reports highlight three factors driving success in inclusive beauty: an organization-wide approach to inclusivity across all consumer touchpoints, meaningful engagement with diverse consumer identities through intersectional thinking and long-term commitments, and transparency in reporting progress on identity-specific product testing and brand commitments.Grupo Boticário emphasizes that the Smart Lipstick embodies these principles, aiming to foster a more inclusive beauty industry.
