Trains leaving Liverpool Lime Street were cancelled while emergency services worked at the scene

National Rail issued an alert at around 6.30pm on Wednesday, September 6, warning passengers of major disruption between Crewe, Runcorn and Warrington Bank Quay while emergency services responded to an incident.

A number of trains leaving Liverpool Lime Street were delayed or cancelled as a result. British Transport Police has now confirmed officers were called to the tracks near Winsford Railway Station in Cheshire following reports of a casualty.Police, paramedics and the fire service attended but a 46-year-old woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesperson said: "The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

National Rail said in a tweet on Wednesday that disruption was expected between Crewe and Warrington Bank Quay until 9.30pm.
