Netflix's latest addition to the crime thriller genre continues a trend set by previous adaptations like Reacher and Cross, proving that Jack Ryan's transition to the big screen may not be a good idea.
Many renowned crime thriller novels are getting small-screen adaptations. This growing trend makes a lot of sense after the wide success of franchises like Bosch, Cross, The Night Agent, and Reacher. Interestingly, though, Prime Video's take on Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is suddenly taking a leap to the big-screens after having a strong small-screen run. While it may be a little too soon to foresee how the movie will turn out, Netflix's new crime thriller series proves that Jack Ryan was better off being a TV series on Prime Video. Reacher, Cross, & Detective Hole Prove Crime Thriller Adaptations Work Better On The Small Screen The two Jack Reacher movies, which starred Tom Cruise, managed to perform fairly well at the box office. However, from a critical standpoint, they struggled to leave their mark because they barely stayed true to the original Lee Child novels. While Tom Cruise's casting itself made little sense, the movies also did not stick to adapting story beats from the original books. After the movie adaptations, many were skeptical about Prime Video's small-screen take on the Lee Child novels. Fortunately, Prime Video's Reacher not only got the perfect actor to portray the titular character but also delivered an accurate adaptation of the books. After three seasons, Reacher boasts a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%, and it is only expected to get better in future installments. A similar trend can be seen with adaptations of James Patterson's Alex Cross books. The books have been adapted into three movies in the past: Kiss the Girls , Along Came a Spider , and Alex Cross . Despite being led by incredible actors, all three films were panned by critics and proved to be box office failures. However, like Reacher, Prime Video's Cross rose above the movie adaptations that preceded it and managed to earn positive reviews from critics. Even from a commercial standpoint, the show has been performing quite well and has also been renewed for season 3. After Reacher and Cross, Jo Nesbø's Detective Hole on Netflix is yet another show that proves crime thriller adaptations work far better on the small screen. Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole book series was picked for a big screen adaptation in 2017. Titled The Snowman, the movie was led by a stellar casting, including Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons. Despite this, it earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 7% and even failed at the box office. Netflix's Detective Hole adaptation, on the other hand, has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Jack Ryan’s Upcoming Movie Seems Like A Risky Step Forward For The Crime Thriller Franchise The early Jack Ryan movies proved to be memorable takes on Tom Clancy's novels. However, recent big-screen extensions of the franchise, including Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Without Remorse, have been underwhelming. Prime Video's TV adaptation of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, in contrast, has performed incredibly well and is soon set to leap to the big screens. Considering how, in recent years, only small-screen crime thriller adaptations have been able to do justice to their source material, it is hard not to be a little concerned about the new Jack Ryan movie. With John Krasinski as its lead, the movie should be a promising addition to the overarching Prime Video franchise. However, considering the box office performances and critical receptions of most modern crime thriller adaptations, the Jack Ryan movie seems like a risky endeavor. The franchise should have continued its run with another season instead of taking the feature film route. One can still hope that the Jack Ryan movie will be better than Reacher and Cross' previous adaptations, but cautious optimism still feels warranted. Reacher follows Jack Reacher, a former military police investigator, as he navigates civilian life. Without a phone and carrying minimal belongings, Reacher drifts across the country, experiencing the nation he once served, and encounters intriguing challenges along the way.
