Emma Roberts as Jill Roberts smiling faintly in Scream 4
Emma Roberts’ Jill Roberts did not return in Scream 7 despite her major connection to Sidney Prescott and previous Ghostfaces making an appearance. Scream 7 continues the horror franchise’s tradition of revisiting its past, once again centering the story on Ghostface attacks connected to Sidney and those closest to her.
Because of that focus, many audiences expected the return of Jill Roberts, Sidney’s cousin, and one of the most celebrated Ghostfaces in the franchise. In an interview with ComicBook.com, franchise veteran writer Guy Busick revealed the reason why Jill is not featured in Scream 7. When asked whether Roberts might have been unavailable or if the character could secretly still be alive, Busick clarified that her fate was solidified, explaining that Jill’s death in Scream 4 was always meant to be definitive. Read his comments below: I don’t know anything about Emma or if she was approached. I love Jill, too. But she was shot in the head. It wasn’t just the defibrillator. Sidney shoots her in the head. That’s a pretty definitive ending… Even more so than Stu. In Scream 4, Jill is revealed as one of the Ghostface killers alongside Charlie Walker . She orchestrates the murders out of jealousy toward Sidney, hoping to recreate the Woodsboro killings and emerge as the sole survivor to gain fame. She betrays Charlie, kills him, stabs Sidney, and even injures herself to appear like a victim. In the end, Sidney survives and fights back. However, Busick was mistaken, and Jill dies after Sydney ultimately electrocutes her head with a defibrillator before shooting her through the heart. While Jill’s absence may disappoint some, Scream 7 still heavily embraces the franchise’s legacy. The film revisits several elements from earlier installments and brings back multiple characters tied to Sidney’s long history with Ghostface. As the latest chapter in the meta-slasher franchise, the sequel continues exploring how the Woodsboro murders continue to shape generations. Scream 7 follows Sidney as she returns to face new Ghostface killers who are targeting her teenage daughter, Tatum , in their quiet town of Pine Grove. Mixing old horror tropes with new ones, such as the use of AI to deepfake videos of different Ghostfaces to torment Sydney, the film leans heavily on nostalgia and past entries in the franchise. The film’s reception, however, has been more divided than previous installments. While some viewers praised the movie for bringing Sidney back to the forefront and leaning further into the franchise’s meta storytelling, others criticized multiple aspects of its narrative choices and repetitive motives. Reviews have recognized the film’s attempt to repeatedly lean on legacy callbacks as a weakness. Jill’s absence might have left a gap for viewers who appreciated her shocking reveal in Scream 4, but the film’s exploration of Ghostface’s enduring legacy ensures that the franchise’s history remains a central part of the story. Even without Jill’s return, Scream 7 demonstrates that the influence of past killers continues to shape the franchise’s future, proving that Ghostface’s legacy never truly dies. Sidney Prescott's quiet life is shattered when a new Ghostface killer emerges, setting sights on her daughter. As fear and violence return, Sidney must confront her haunting past to safeguard her family.
