1. Children at Risk grades are different from TEA scores
Children at Risk scores tend to be a little lower than TEA accountability scores. TEA and CAR use the same three metrics, but the state weighs them differently. The TEA will choose the stronger of the student achievement and the growth score -- and weigh the higher of two scores at 70 percent, whereas CAR weighs them evenly across the board.2. Middle and elementary schools saw improvements.
About 450 Houston elementary schools improved their scores, while 328 performed worse. Middle schools were almost even at 163 performing better and 156 doing worse than pre pandemic times. High schools, however, were by far the most likely to underperform compared to 2019. About 140 high school scores fell since 2019, while only 50 improved.Children at Risk awards a Gold Ribbon designation to campuses that outperform their peers. More than 75 percent of a Gold Ribbon School campus' students are low-income and they receive an A or a B in the nonprofit’s annual school rankings.
Harris County had 50 gold ribbon schools, Fort Bend had four, Brazoria had two, Montgomery has two and Galveston had one.As Houston elementary schools see rebounds post-COVID, high schools keep struggling. Here's why.About 25,500 students attended schools with an A rating, whereas 40,000 students attended high schools with an F rating. The schools with F rating tended to have larger populations. 27 high schools had A ratings, while 21 had Fs.
