The education advocacy and research nonprofit has been ranking Texas public schools for nearly 20 years, primarily using state standardized math and reading test scores, as well as high school achievement data to grade campuses.
Elementary and middle schools are graded upon three metrics: raw student achievement, achievement relative to poverty levels, and year-over-year student growth. High schools are also graded on a fourth metric, college readiness, which evaluates if students are graduating on time.As Houston elementary schools see rebounds post-COVID, high schools keep struggling. Houston's high schools fared much worse than its elementary and middle schools, as campuses continue to battle learning loss from the pandemic. Far more students attend 'F' ranked schools than 'A' ranked schools at Houston's large high schools. About 140 high schools scores fell since 2019, while only 50 improved.
Carnegie Vanguard High School was ranked the No. 1 high school in Houston, followed by Young Women's College Prep Academy and Eastwood Academy.
