West Yorkshire Police claimed crime in the East Leeds area had gone down but residents say there is serious crime every day
“No, I think crime has gone up!” declared a Harehills shop owner, after West Yorkshire Police claimed crime had gone down by 40 per cent in the East Leeds area over the past year.
The 58-year-old said: “No, I think crime has gone up. A few years ago, it wasn’t this bad. I’ve seen so many things in the past year. I’ve seen knives, stabbing, road violence, on-street violence, a murder as well. I don’t agree with the police that it is 40 per cent down. Mr Ali, a father-of-two, has owned E-Direct on Harehills Lane for 12 years. He said: “I see something every day around here. I don’t know how police is saying it’s down. I see fighting, knives, drugs. It’s alright – but it going down? I don’t know about that really.”
