Just this week, Blake Sabol has made his first MLB start, gotten his first career hit and, now, his first home run — a 434-foot shot vs. the White Sox.
The ball, which landed about a dozen rows up in center field, will be a little harder to retrieve than his first hit — a bunt single — or fellow rookie Bryce Johnson’s first career homer, which landed in the Giants’ bullpen in. But teams typically find a way, meaning Sabol will have another souvenir to add to his collection from a memorable first road trip.
The latest long ball of the Giants’ power surge, Sabol’s homer also helped set a franchise record. It was the 12th time San Francisco left the yard in its first six games, the most in franchise history. Michael Conforto tied the record in the first inning with a three-run shot to right, his second homer of the season.
Sabol added a single in his second at-bat, and in the bottom half of the second almost nabbed his first base runner behind the plate. He fired to second base on a double steal attempt by the White Sox, where Seby Savala was ruled safe. The Giants thought David Villar put the tag on Savala before he reached the bag and challenged the play but it was upheld upon review, and Savala scored on Tim Anderson’s two-RBI single a batter later.
It added up to a big day for Sabol, who must prove that he can be a reliable major-league catcher and that his offensive track record in the minors can translate against big-league pitching if he is going to last the season on the Giants’ active roster. As a Rule 5 pick, Sabol must be offered back to Pittsburgh if he isn’t on the Giants’ 26-man roster.
