Landen Roupp pitched six shutout innings in his return to Petco Park, where he sustained a bone bruise left August
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 30: Harrison Bader #9 of the San Francisco Giants is congratulated at the dugout by Willy Adames #2 after hitting a home run against the San Diego Padres during the third inning at Petco Park on March 30, 2026 in San Diego, California.
Behind Landen Roupp’s six brilliant shutout innings and production from the bottom of the order, the Giants defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Monday evening at Petco Park as Vitello secured his first-ever victory as a major league manager. “It’s hard to comprehend because I have the same disease as every other coach. You want the proper guys to get their props that got it done tonight, which really was a lot of guys, especially if you include defense,” Vitello said. “It’ll probably soak in getting back to the hotel. Pretty special looking around the room, whether it’s in the office, in the dugout or in the locker room.” For Roupp, who struck out seven batters and allowed just two hits, Monday marked his first start since Aug. 20, 2025, the evening when he suffered a nasty bone bruise and had to be carted off the field. This start marked the fifth time in Roupp’s career that he pitched at least six innings and allowed no runs. Roupp allowed a one-out single to Fernando Tatis Jr. with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and with the left-handed hitting Jackson Merrill looming two batters later, Roupp likely would’ve been pulled in favor of the left-hander Matt Gage. Instead, Roupp induced an inning-ending 1-4-3 double play, clenching his body and unleashing a cathartic yell before walking off the field. “I just felt in control the whole game,” Roupp said. “Even with runners on base, I just had everything working for me.” “I think he was just in warrior mode tonight,” Vitello said. “You could see it a little bit before the game, and that’s not too far from who he is as a guy. When we first guy the job, he was one of the guys Frank was quickest to talk about. … I don’t think he was anything from the norm from who he is, but he was in warrior mode tonight.” Vitello shook up the top of his lineup for Monday’s game, inserting Willy Adames into the leadoff spot for just the third time in his career and selecting former Padre Luis Arraez as his cleanup hitter. It was the bottom third, though, that did early damage. Harrison Bader, batting seventh, hit the first home run by any Giant this season in the top of the third inning, a solo shot that gave San Francisco a 1-0 lead — its first lead of the season. San Francisco tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles by Bailey and Casey Schmitt, the eighth and ninth hitters. Following Roupp’s departure, Vitello deployed his bullpen to protect a lead for the first time in his managerial career. In his fourth game, the rookie manager punched the right buttons, although the ninth was not without some drama. Gage handled the seventh inning without issue, retiring the side in order. Right-hander Keaton Winn one-upped Gage in the eighth inning by striking out the side . That left the bottom of the ninth for the crossfiring right-hander Ryan Walker. Walker began his evening by walking Jake Cronenworth on four non-competitive pitches, adding a tinge of anxiety to the air. Walker responded by striking out Fernando Tatis Jr. swinging, then got Manny Machado to ground out softly. With the Padres down to their last strike, Jackson Merrill hit a two-run shot that sliced the Giants’ lead to 3-2.‘I’ll be plotting my revenge’: SF Giants’ Vitello gets beer shower treatment in first win as rookie managerKurtenbach: From Sleepy Bob to Spectator Tony — Vitello’s mark yet to be seen on 2026 SF GiantsFollowing a mound visit by pitching coach Justin Meccage, Walker composed himself and got Xander Bogaerts to ground out, securing Vitello’s first win as major league manager. “He gave up two runs, but found a way to get it done,” Vitello said. “That, at the end of the day, is the job. You kind of have to have familiarity with that role for a lot of different reasons, but if you are, there’s some microchip in those guys that know they just need to get to the finish line. “I’m all for three of those relieving efforts. Keaton was really special, but it’s hard to say he was better than Gage. So, all in all, great night. … I’m honored with all the attention, but I thought tonight, it’s fitting that our first win is basically a strong pitching effort because those four guys work their off and they really have to seem to have a strong sense of camaraderie themselves.” Walnut Creek man allegedly killed three people to be with his mistress.
