The Roadrunners trailed by double digits early in the fourth quarter before the offense came alive, delivering a 12th straight home win.
Needing one more victory to set a record for the longest home winning streak in program history, UTSA instead seemed to be on the verge of a second straight loss, trailing by double digits early in the fourth quarter.
But an offense that had been dormant for much of the game came alive with a string of 3-pointers, and a 14-1 run with less than three minutes to play pushed the Roadrunners over the top. The surge lifted UTSA to a 70-61 win against Temple on Saturday in the Convocation Center, giving the Roadrunners a 12th straight victory on their home court, breaking a record set in 2003. UTSA matched last season’s win total, entering Sunday holding no worse than a tie with North Texas atop the league standings. The Roadrunners also delivered a rebound win after a 75-63 setback Wednesday at South Florida that ended a 10-game winning streak overall. Jordyn Jenkins, the AAC’s leading scorer at 18.9 points per game entering Saturday, scored a team-high 16 points, returning to the starting lineup after missing UTSA’s previous game. Jenkins suffered an injury in UTSA’s most recent home game Jan. 22, landing awkwardly after leaping in pursuit of a full-court pass late in the third quarter. She finished an offensive rebound with a spinning left-handed layup in the opening minute for the Roadrunners’ first points Saturday, but she was held scoreless the rest of the period as the offense floundered. UTSA finished the half shooting just 28.6%, including 0 for 8 from 3-point range, with 13 turnovers, and Idara Udo was the team’s top scorer with six points. Temple, meanwhile, opened the game 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. The Owls used an 8-0 run to take a lead as large as 17-8 in the opening quarter, then scored the final seven points of the half to lead 36-24 at the break. After coach Karen Aston rotated through a dozen players across the first 20 minutes, the Roadrunners starters found a footing in the third quarter. UTSA hit 6 of its first 9 shots to open the period, cutting the margin to 45-40 with about five minutes to play in the quarter. Temple answered with six straight points to extend the cushion, but UTSA surged to an 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter, drawing even at 53 when Sidney Love and Nina De Leon Negron hit back-to-back 3-pointers with about six minutes to play. Temple converted a pair of 3-pointers through the next three minutes to rebuild a 60-56 advantage, but the rest of the game was all UTSA. Four different players scored as UTSA closed on a 14-1 run, holding Temple without a field goal. UTSA shot 40.6% and 41.7% beyond the arc in the second half with just five turnovers. Udo finished with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while De Leon Negron scored 14 with a game-high eight assists. Cheyenne Rowe also added 12 points off the bench. The Roadrunners’ 10-game overall winning streak had been the second-longest in program history, bested only by a 13-game run in 2002-03. The 12-game home streak broke a record also set in 2003. UTSA’s past two games have been against perhaps the toughest competition in the AAC. Entering Saturday, South Florida was the top-rated team from the AAC in the NCAA’s NET rankings, checking in at No. 65. UTSA ranked No. 74, with Temple third in the league at No. 105. The top four teams in the league standings have byes in the AAC tournament, and Saturday’s win keeps UTSA atop the league standings, with North Texas also sitting 8-1 entering Saturday’s matchup with 7-2 South Florida. The Roadrunners’ early success delivered another strong crowd to the Convocation Center on Saturday, as the 1,412 in attendance marked the third straight game eclipsing 1,300. UTSA’s comeback Saturday marked the second time this season the Roadrunners have erased an 11-point margin in the fourth quarter, rallying from 62-51 down to beat Memphis 70-68 on Jan. 15.
