Primo Spears led UTSA with a career-high 40 points, but the Roadrunners fell to Tulsa in their American Athletic Conference opener.
In the final minute of a career-high 40-point game, UTSA ’s Primo Spears drove to his right and put a layup high off the glass through contact, adding a free throw to give the Roadrunners the lead. But his final moments also included a few haunting missteps — a pair of errant free throws, a layup that was off the mark and finally a turnover that allowed Tulsa to convert a game-sealing dunk on a fast break.
As coach Austin Claunch was preparing to open his first season at UTSA two months ago, he knew the Roadrunners would have to weather a few ups and downs. He inherited a program coming off three straight 20-loss seasons and led a roster overhaul, leaving the group's identity an open question. The Roadrunners have started to deliver on parts of Claunch’s vision, boasting a team that plays fast and forces turnovers. Other goals remain works in progress. Claunch said one of his annual aims will be posting an undefeated mark at home. That chase that was snuffed out early in the nonconference season and met another hiccup Tuesday, as UTSA lost 82-77 to Tulsa in the Roadrunners' first American Athletic Conference game in the Convocation Center. “We just have to keep working. We have to keep chipping away. It's a long season,” Claunch said. “If we find a way to finish that one, we’re really, really pleased, because we played great for 26 minutes. So, obviously, an improvement, but we have to figure out how to finish games.” Spears posted the most efficient 40-point game Claunch said he could remember coaching, hitting 13 of 23 attempts, 5 of 7 from beyond the arc and 9 of 11 at the free-throw line. He also led the Roadrunners (6-8, 0-2 AAC) with five assists against just two turnovers
