Renault UK boss warns that achieving the 80% EV sales target by 2030 requires government support, industry collaboration, and affordable pricing.

The UK faces a challenge in reaching its ambitious target of 80% electric vehicle (EV) sales by 2030. Adam Wood, the newly appointed head of Renault UK, expressed this concern, stating that while the new Renault 5 , priced at £22,995, holds the potential to break into the mainstream EV market, further incentives and support are crucial for widespread adoption.

Currently, government regulations under the zero emission vehicles (ZEV) mandate require car manufacturers to sell 28% of their vehicles as EVs, with this percentage steadily increasing to 80% by 2030. Companies face hefty fines if they fail to meet these targets. Despite this, Renault UK achieved 15% EV sales in 2024, falling short of the 22% target. However, the final quarter of 2024 saw a promising 22% EV sales mix, driven by the new Scenic E-Tech. Wood emphasized the need for a comprehensive and collaborative plan involving the government, car manufacturers, and the charging infrastructure industry to achieve the 80% target. He stressed that incentives for private buyers are essential alongside accelerated installation of charging points, particularly on-street chargers. He highlighted the importance of effective communication between all stakeholders, stating that a lack of dialogue is hindering the progress towards achieving the ZEV mandate. He believes that setting realistic and achievable targets requires open and consistent communication. Wood underscored that addressing customer concerns is paramount for exponential growth in the EV market. He identified price as a major barrier for potential buyers, emphasizing the need for both car manufacturers to offer more affordable EVs and government incentives such as reduced VAT on public charging and purchase costs. He believes that the Renault 5 and the upcoming Renault 4 demonstrate the demand for EVs at the right price point, and that introducing the new Twingo to the UK market would further bolster this trend. While Renault is still evaluating the feasibility of a right-hand-drive Twingo for the UK, the positive reception to the car suggests it could be a valuable addition to their lineup
