Renault UK's new boss, Adam Wood, argues that incentives are necessary for the UK to reach its 80% electric vehicle (EV) sales target by 2030. While the new Renault 5, priced at £22,240, has the potential to drive mainstream EV adoption, Wood emphasizes the need for a comprehensive plan involving industry, charging infrastructure, and government to accelerate EV uptake. He calls for increased charger installation, particularly on-street, and improved communication to bridge the gap between demand and the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Mandate. Wood also highlights the importance of addressing customer concerns, such as upfront purchase costs, and the need to make EVs more affordable through price reductions or incentives.
The UK will not achieve the government's target of 80% EV sales by 2030 without incentives of some kind being made available to private buyers. That's according to new Renault UK boss Adam Wood, who said that while the new Renault 5, priced from £22,240, can “break the glass ceiling” of mainstream electric car ownership, more is needed before mass take-up is achieved.
“It is a team game,” he added, “We need a system that brings confidence.” When asked which of these demands was the most important to Renault, he said: “I do not think it is an either/or situation. We have to address every customer concern if we are going to grow exponentially.
