UAB held on for a win at North Texas on Saturday, netting its fifth straight road win to open conference play.
Published: Jan. 31, 2026, 9:31 p.m.UAB’s road success has reached historic heights. The Blazers remained unbeaten in conference play on Saturday night, holding on for a 72-68 win at North Texas. UAB tied a program record with five straight road wins, equaling the mark set by the 1981-82 team when the Blazers were part of the Sun Belt Conference.
UAB has won six straight games away from Bartow Arena, dating back to a 74-69 win at Drake on Dec. 5. “Our guys fight, man. They really fight,” UAB head coach Andy Kennedy told Blazers Sports Network after the game. “They’ve got a resolve about them. We’ve done this enough that, on the road, we don’t lose our poise.” The Blazers nearly threw away the victory in the final minute on Saturday, converting on just one of their four free-throw attempts. After UNT cut UAB’s lead to 71-68, the Mean Green sent Dayjaun Anderson to the line for a pair of free throws with 15.5 seconds remaining. The junior college transfer proceeded to miss both of his attempts. However, UNT couldn’t capitalize, missing on a pair of free throws on the other end. UAB was finally able to pull out of reach from the line, but not without a last bit of drama. Clinging to a 3-point lead with 4.9 seconds remaining, Jacob Meyer missed his first free-throw attempt before sinking his second to extend the lead to two possessions. UAB finished the night 11 of 18 from the line, while UNT shot 17 of 23 . Chance Westry led UAB with 18 points on 9 of 11 shooting, including a driving layup to give the Blazers a 71-66 lead with 26 seconds remaining. The starting point guard also dished out a team-high four assists while recording four rebounds. UAB gave Denton, Texas native KyeRon Lindsay-Martin the start in his return to his hometown. The senior forward made the most of the opportunity, recording his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow Texas native Evan Chatman finished with just 6 points but had seven rebounds and hit a pair of clutch free throws with 1:40 remaining. Making his second straight start, Anderson came up big late, scoring all 13 of his points in the second half. He missed his first four shots from deep before nailing back-to-back 3s early in the second half. UNT entered the night ranked 15th nationally, forcing 15.57 turnovers per game. The Mean Green forced just 12 UAB turnovers. However, they turned them into 17 points the other way. Meanwhile, UAB was able to generate just 6 points on six UNT turnovers. Je’Shawn Stevenson led the Mean Green with 21 points, while David Terrell Jr. and Reece Robinson also finished in double figures. However, that trio was unable to come through when it mattered most, as the Mean Green missed its final four shots from the floor while failing to record a field goal over the game’s final 2:45. After extending its road winning streak, UAB will now look to record its first home win in league play when it hosts rival Memphis on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT inside Bartow Arena. That game will be televised by ESPN2. “They’re really a talented group, and a group that has had their way with us for the majority of the time,” Kennedy said of Memphis. “So, my hope is that we’ve at least created enough resolve and belief in the Blazer nation that we can come out and continue to support your hometown Blazers. And I hope that we can play better, because it’s going to take a better effort to beat a team as talented as Memphis.”
