There are plenty of actors who talk about loving Star Wars, but Helen Hunt sounds like someone who still gets the same kick out of it as any fan walking a convention floor. While appearing at MegaCon Orlando recently on a panel hosted by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, Hunt opened up about the movies that shaped her, the kind of stories she gravitates toward, and the one giant franchise she would still clearly love to join.
She may not see herself making a Star Wars movie, but she definitely knows she would like to be in one. Star Wars Movies and Shows Ranked by RT Scores Hunt explained that, as a creative force, her tastes have always leaned more towards character-driven stories, pointing to the work of icons like James L. Brooks and Billy Wilder, and the fast, witty rhythm of older black-and-white films as major influences on the kinds of projects she loves. That helps explain the kind of work she has been drawn to throughout her career, but she also made it clear that one of her biggest fandoms sits in a very different lane. “I’m a Star Wars fan,” Hunt said, before adding with a laugh, “but I don’t know how to make a Star Wars movie.” However, Hunt isn't letting that stop her from manifesting her dream role in the sprawling franchise. small Related Clooney or Gosling? — The Collider Movie Quiz! Helen Hunt Wants To Be in 'Star Wars' That led to the obvious next question: If Hunt could make a Star Wars movie, what kind of story would she want to tell? Hunt did not pretend to have some grand pitch ready to go. Instead, she gave a much more relatable answer. She told the audience, “Oh goodness, I mean, I don’t know. I know my favorite ones. I just want to be in one. If they need some president of some planet.” Honestly, that is a pretty great pitch already and one that would see her follow in the footsteps of Laura Dern. Hunt stepping into Star Wars as some no-nonsense galactic leader feels like something the franchise could absolutely make work. The conversation also touched on the experience of being at a convention surrounded by fans in full costume, and Hunt made it clear she is not looking at any of it from a distance. Even sitting on the guest side of the table, she still sounds like a fan first, saying: “What’s the difference? I’m sitting on this side of the table, but I’m like, that’s a stormtrooper right there and C-3PO just walked by. So I am a fan. I’m a big movie fan.” At the end of the day, it's a comfort for us to know that, as successful as they might be professionally, the people we watch on the big screen are just fans like the rest of us.
