Black and MCU star Paul Rudd starred in the movie Anaconda. The film is about two best friends, Griff and Doug, played by Rudd and Black, respectively. The duo sets out to recreate their favorite movie, Anaconda, as a part of their midlife crisis.
They get a crew together and head deep into the Amazon jungle, but the movie becomes all too real when a giant snake starts hunting them down. Despite the film being released at the end of last year, the comedy made it to #1 on the streaming charts on Netflix in the United States and #1 on HBO Max in various countries around the world. Despite its popularity with audiences, it only sits at a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic said it"misses the mark," but the fans disagree, as it scored 78% on the Popcornmeter. Black's comedy made its way back into popular culture at the perfect time, as his new film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is about to be released in theaters. Black voices Bowser alongside Chris Pratt as Mario, Brie Larson as Rosalina, and Charlie Day as Luigi. The animated film is based on the 2007 Super Mario Galaxy game and its 2010 sequel. Mario Galaxy is the sequel to the 2023 The Super Mario Bros. movie. When seeing the new Super Mario movie in theaters, viewers may be taken aback when they hear Mario speak his famous catchphrase,"Mamma Mia." Pratt changed the dynamic of the catchphrase to better represent his interpretation of the character. He asked,"Why does it make sense for a guy who's from Brooklyn who doesn't have that accent to use that so much?" In the original video game, Mario says the phrase in a fast, high-pitched tone, but in the movie, Pratt uses the context of the scene to determine how he says the catchphrase. He added that the"Mamma Mia" phrase is only really said when someone is using an Italian accent. So, Pratt slowed down the phrase to"take some of the stink off it." Black has appeared in a host of video game adaptations, and he's not done. He revealed he would like to star in a film about Sega's long-running Yakuza game franchise. He said,"I don't know if there any parts for me, like a portly American, but talk to me. Sega, give me a jingle." The game started in 2005 when it was launched on PlayStation 2. It follows the main character, Kazuma Kiryu, through Tokyo's criminal world. Jack Black's film Anaconda can be streamed on Netflix in the U.S., and Mario Galaxy comes out in theaters on April 1, 2026.
