Travis County Commissioners Court unanimously voted Tuesday to extend the local disaster declaration as search and rescue operations continue inThe disaster declaration expedites emergency operations and collaboration among local, state and federal agencies while allowing faster access to resources for flood-impacted residents, according to a county news release.
"The stress and the death and the destruction that the people that live along Sandy Creek and Cow Creek have gone through is, frankly unimaginable to me," Commissioner Brigid Shea said during Tuesday's meeting."This is going to be a long recovery, not only for individuals, but the physical, the infrastructure destruction is just going to take, take a minute to repair and rebuild," Howard said. To support recovery efforts, commissioners authorized the Transportation and Natural Resources Department to contract with a vendor for storm debris pickup in affected unincorporated areas. The county approved spending up to $4 million from its emergency reserve for the debris removal operation. "This has been a combined effort of a lot of agencies, but again, led by ESD one. They're ongoing. They're working extremely hard," Shea said. Residents can separate debris into categories including large appliances, construction materials and vegetation for curbside collection.at 2625 Woodall Dr. in Leander, which is open Thursday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.for residents seeking to rebuild, provided they show proof their insurance will not cover the costs.A burn ban took effect Tuesday for northwest Travis County, specifically neighborhoods along Big Sandy Creek, Cow Creek and other low-lying creek areas. The ban runs through Aug. 5 unless extended by the county judge or fire marshal.
