A lawsuit filed by Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons against the Summit County Board of Commissioners centers on a dispute over a budget appropriation for employee salaries and staffing expenses.

On June 10th, Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons filed a lawsuit against the Summit Board of County Commissioners in district court. The lawsuit centers around the rejection of a budget appropriation for salaries and staffing expenses. A press release from the Summit County Sheriff ’s Office states that the complaint stems from a resolution adopted by the commissioners on May 13th, which the Sheriff ’s Office claims “retroactively denied a supplemental budget and appropriation of $1.

26 million for 2024 Sheriff’s Office staffing expenses.”\The release further argues that the wages related to these expenses had already been earned, approved by County Manager Dave Rossi and finance director Dave Reynolds, and paid through standard payroll procedures. It emphasizes that the budget appropriation request sought to support staffing and overtime costs associated with a compensation plan for law enforcement officers that was approved by the Board of County Commissioners in 2022. The 2022 plan was developed collaboratively by the Sheriff’s Office, county staff, and commissioners in response to a nationwide crisis in law enforcement recruitment and retention.\Adrienne Saia Isaac, Summit County communications director, confirmed that county government officials learned about the lawsuit via the press release issued by the Sheriff’s Office around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10th. She stated that the county is currently reviewing the lawsuit and, in accordance with standard practice, declined to comment on pending litigation
