Nassau County police honored more than 100 officers and staff, including two sergeants recognized for a major fentanyl investigation, during an annual awards ceremony.

A massive drug investigation in Elmont has led to multiple arrests and the seizure of millions of deadly pills, authorities say. Police recovered more than 3 million fentanyl-laced pills, along with four kilograms of fentanyl, a ghost gun, and other drug paraphernalia as part of the case.

Investigators say the operation was the result of a yearslong effort to dismantle a major drug distribution network impacting the community. According to officials, the investigation began three years ago following a fatal overdose. That case ultimately helped uncover a much broader pipeline of fentanyl in the area. The officers who led the investigation were honored Tuesday night at the Nassau County Police Department’s award ceremony. Sgts. Daniel Concannon and Robert Galgano received the Medal of Distinguished Honor for their work on the case. "It's nice to see, to be recognized. It deserves to be highlighted when a cop does the right thing," said Galgano during the ceremony. The event also recognized Nassau County Police Department Employee of the Year Robert Griggs III. A mechanic with autism, Griggs said that working alongside officers has been a lifelong goal. "I want to thank my dad because he really inspired me. He told me, 'Work hard and learn as much as you can.' And I'm doing just that," Griggs said.More from News 12
