For the first time in over three decades, Columbus sports fans officially have a professional outdoor football team to call their own. The Columbus Aviators make their league debut tonight against the Orlando Storm, ending a 34-year drought for the city.
While Central Ohio has long been defined by the dominance of Ohio State Saturdays, the Aviators represent the first professional outdoor fixture in the region since the Ohio Glory played a single season at Ohio Stadium in 1992.The launch of the Aviators, a new expansion franchise in the United Football League , fills a long-standing void in the local sports landscape. Led by head coach and former Buckeye star Ted Ginn Jr., the team offers a professional alternative for a city that has spent decades without a spring or minor-league outdoor football presence. The roster features several names familiar to Ohio football fans, including former Cleveland Browns linebacker Tony Fields II and quarterback Jalan McClendon. The coaching staff also brings NFL pedigree to the sidelines with offensive coordinator Todd Haley.
