Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Dune 2 looking off-screen

Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides is officially back, and he's got a gritty new look for Dune: Part Three. Ahead of the long-awaited film's release in December 2026, Chalamet shared via Instagram stories a first look at Paul Atreides in the upcoming Dune 3.

With his goggles up and mask on, a blue-eyed Paul looks sternly into the camera. Check out the new image below: The first look at Paul's return also gives a glimpse at his changing appearance as described in Frank Herbert's Dune books. In addition to taking on the physical toll of his prescience and powers, Paul living in the desert for so long gives him a"leathery" look to his skin. However, the appearance of scars may suggest the next film may be taking Paul's physical changes a step further. Of course, Chalamet's Paul Atreides continues to have piercing, deep blue eyes from his spice usage throughout the Dune movies. While the top of his head is covered by a mask, the image also teases Paul for the first time without his long hair. Chalamet confirmed that he shaved his head for Dune: Part Three, reflecting the time jump and aging of Paul between the second and third films. Chalamet previously teased Paul Atreides' Dune 3 return as"more intense" than the two previous movies. Noting that Dune: Part Three is his last movie in the franchise, Chalamet elaborated that he wanted to treat his return and experience as"sacred." Furthermore, the Oscar nominee clarified that Dune 3's time jump after Part Two will be approximately 15–20 years. Paul's story certainly left off with increasingly tense prospects in Dune 2's ending, which saw him take over control of the Imperium, become Emperor, embrace being the Fremen's messiah, forge a marriage with Princess Irulan, and prepare to lead his followers in a Holy War against the Great Houses. Premiering in theaters on December 18, 2026, Dune: Part Three is set to adapt Frank Herbert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah. Alongside Denis Villeneuve returning as the writer-director and Timothée Chalamet reprising his role as Paul Atreides, Dune 3's returning cast includes Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, and Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck. Among the newcomers joining the epic space opera franchise for the third movie are Robert Pattinson as Scytale, Nakoa Wolf-Momoa as Leto II Atreides, and Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides. Once the first Dune 3 teasers begin to drop, it's expected more casting confirmations regarding new and returning book characters will follow. Also returning for Dune: Part Three are Hans Zimmer as the composer and Joe Walker as the film's editor. In addition to the release of Dune: Part Three this year, Warner Bros. is set to bring the franchise back to the small screen. HBO's Dune: Prophecy series was renewed for season 2 in December 2024. Alongside releasing first-look images, HBO Max confirmed that Dune: Prohpecy season 2 will premiere in 2026. However, the network has yet to set an official release date for season 2.
