TikTok faces a looming ban in the United States unless the Biden administration provides concrete assurances regarding its enforcement. The platform issued a statement on Friday indicating its intention to cease operations on Sunday if it doesn't receive the necessary guarantees. The Supreme Court upheld the law banning TikTok earlier in the day, citing national security concerns related to its Chinese ownership.
TikTok announced on Friday that the social media platform would cease operations on Sunday unless the Biden administration provided definitive assurances that the impending ban would not be enforced. In a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, TikTok expressed its disappointment with the lack of clarity from both the White House and the Department of Justice regarding the platform's future.
'The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok's availability to over 170 million Americans,' TikTok stated. The company further emphasized, 'Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19.'Earlier in the week, the White House had indicated that President Biden did not intend to implement the ban, stating that the decision would ultimately rest with President-elect Donald Trump upon his inauguration on Monday. However, the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday upheld the law prohibiting TikTok unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells the platform by Sunday, citing national security concerns related to its Chinese ownership. President-elect Trump claimed he needed time to review the situation before making a final determination. 'The Supreme Court decision was expected, and everyone must respect it,' he stated. 'My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I must have time to review the situation. Stay tuned!'During his presidential campaign, Trump had expressed his intention to avoid banning TikTok after joining the platform himself. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew expressed gratitude towards Trump for his commitment to seek a solution that would allow TikTok to remain accessible in the United States. Chew hailed this approach as a strong defense of the First Amendment and a rejection of arbitrary censorship. Chew is anticipated to attend Trump's inauguration on Monday. It is noteworthy that Trump had previously attempted to ban TikTok during his first term in office
