Thousands of people participated in San Antonio's 38th annual MLK March on Monday, braving an arctic blast to celebrate the legacy of love and equality. The event, held on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, had the feel of a reunion, with friends and families gathering for warmth, music, and speeches. Despite the challenging weather, the march showcased the city's commitment to honoring King's message.
As they waited on the sidewalk on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Danielle Moreno and her mother, Betty Washington, smiled and danced to the music, watching the crowd assemble. A year ago, this stretch of San Antonio ’s East Side was nearly silent, as icy roads and cold temperatures forced the cancellation of the march and celebration. But on Monday morning, despite an arctic blast that kept temperatures in the 30s, thousands turned out for the 38th annual MLK March.
As arctic blast hits San Antonio, city opens overnight shelters, daytime warming centers It took a bit of convincing for Washington to venture out into the cold on Monday, but Moreno, who lives in Schertz, said she never hesitated. She's been participating in the march for 15 years. “The only time I missed was when I was deployed,” she said. “It’s a big deal.” Last year's cancellation was the third in five years.
How San Antonio’s MLK March got its start Along the march route, families sold snacks and hot drinks. Some played music or recordings of King’s speeches. Some participants carried signs with famous quotations, others with handwritten messages of their own. Jacque Salame's placard declared: “People over policing.' “I’m a human rights activist,” Salame said. “I’m trying to keep the conversation going about police brutality and systemic racism.
