Ella Purnell as Rhiannon in a bloody white shirt staring into the camera in Sweetpea
Ella Purnell has made a name for herself in recent years, becoming known for Fallout, where she plays the naive Lucy MacLean, a hero who is positive, confident, and a firm believer in the golden rule, as she makes her way through a dystopian world.
Over the show's two seasons, Purnell has proven herself a skilled performer as Lucy slowly learns to handle the dangers around her. However, that isn't the only character Purnell can pull off, as shown in another series she stars in, Sweetpea, a dark thriller full of murder and surprises. This Starz series follows Purnell's Rhiannon as her building rage gets the better of her. With only six episodes, Sweetpea is a quick watch, yet it is part of a much larger story. The series is based on a 2017 novel of the same name by CJ Skuse, which has five sequels, leaving much left to cover. Fortunately, the show is heading down the same path as it prepares to return for Season 2 following Season 1's shocking ending. With the next installment set for later this year, now is the perfect time to catch up on the twisted tale, which will not disappoint. What Is 'Sweetpea' About? Purnell's thriller follows her character, Rhiannon, who seems like a normal, shy girl, but develops a dark secret. No one seems to notice Rhiannon, not her coworkers at the local paper or strangers on the street, and though she resents that fact, she is used to it. She lives in her hometown, taking care of her ailing father, who is the only one who encourages her. But Rhiannon's history of being bullied and tendency to fade into the background have made her hate nearly everyone to the point she keeps a running list of people she would like to kill. Despite this mental aggression, Rhiannon cannot even make her voice heard, let alone push back. However, her life falls apart as she loses her father, her childhood bully, Julia Blenkingsopp returns to her life, and she is passed over for a promotion at work in favor of the likable A.J. . When Rhiannon decides to take control of her life, she does so in the worst way possible: murder. Though this drastic action isn't planned, Rhiannon's first kill drives her to become the person she's always wanted to be, and she finally feels what it's like to be noticed. With such a satisfying result, she doesn't give it up. Rhiannon continues her bloody path, even as the investigation into her murders picks up, putting her in danger of being found out. It's a twist-filled tale and perfect for any fans of dark and bloody stories. Posts By Rohan Naahar 'Sweetpea' Provides Interesting Characters and Plenty of Surprises Purnell's performance is a standout in Sweetpea, providing a lead who, while clearly in the wrong, makes the audience want to root for her. The gradual change from invisible young woman to thriving murderer shows Purnell's talent and keeps the series engaging. The supporting cast is memorable as well, each playing up the parts of the character that annoy Rhiannon and push her to her breaking point, from Julia's mean girl attitude that hasn't changed as they grew up to the condescension of Rhiannon's boss, Norman , whose condescending nickname for her gives the series its name. This, along with Rhiannon's narration, helps place the audience in her head, making for an intriguing story. Beyond the characters, Sweetpea excels in staying unpredictable with Rhiannon's changing nature, offering several shocks as the season progresses. As she leans into her bloody plan, Rhiannon's story keeps the audience guessing as she creates a new life for herself, even if it might make her a monster. Sweetpea isn't a long commitment, but with the promise of more soon, now is the perfect time to binge the unforgettable show.
