The inspiring yet heart-wrenching true story of Claressa Shields, the first female Olympic boxing gold medalist, is brought to life in the film. Directed by Rachel Morrison and written by Barry Jenkins, the film follows 16-year-old Claressa's journey growing up in poverty in Flint, Michigan, and the obstacles she, alongside her trainer Jason Crutchfield, overcomes to achieve her historic feat at the 2012 Olympics.
Ryan Destiny, who portrays Claressa, spoke to us about the film and why telling her story on the big screen was so important. Destiny revealed that she was unfamiliar with Claressa's story prior to the film and was struck by the lack of recognition given to her accomplishment. She saw the role as an opportunity to shed light on Claressa's journey and highlight the strength and vulnerability of this young woman. To prepare for the role, Destiny drew upon her own teenage experiences and the natural instinct to embody the character. She worked closely with Brian Tyree Henry, who portrays Jason Crutchfield, to create a realistic and grounded portrayal of their complex relationship.
