John and Jesse Roggendorf, fraternal twins and seniors at Great Neck South High School, are leading their varsity basketball team to an undefeated season.
A pair of fraternal twins are leading the charge for Great Neck South’s varsity basketball team, which is undefeated and aiming to secure a Nassau County championship for the first time since 1967. Seniors John and Jesse Roggendorf, both 17, combined for 48 points during the Rebels’ most recent victory against MacArthur High School , propelling them to a 14-0 record. But this achievement is just the beginning for the twin stars.
John, a 6-foot-5 forward, and Jesse, a 6-1 guard, have been instrumental in the team’s success since their freshman year. The dynamic duo constantly pushes each other, whether it’s through backyard one-on-one games or on-court practice. John, the older twin by two minutes, focuses on helping Jesse develop his power, while Jesse, in turn, helps John refine his finesse and speed. Their dedication to the sport is evident in their six-hour daily training regimen, which includes watching game films and providing constructive criticism for each other’s performance. They believe they can offer each other a more insightful analysis than they could on their own.Coach Holleran praises the twins’ individual strengths. Jesse, last year’s conference player of the year, is known for his humor, while John, who made all-county as a sophomore, is recognized for his maturity. John averages a double-double, while Jesse leads the team in scoring with over 1,000 career points. Coach Holleran trusts the twins’ basketball acumen, allowing them to make decisions on the court, such as choosing between man or zone defense. They leverage their different perspectives to anticipate plays and strategize effectively. Beyond their exceptional skills, the twins bring a lighthearted energy to the team. John wears number 20 and Jesse takes 10, a playful nod to John’s size. Their camaraderie extends beyond the court, with the team bonding over frequent off-court outings. However, the twins and their teammates are driven by a shared ambition to win Great Neck South’s first county championship since before the Jets won the Super Bowl. Last year, despite a strong 17-win season, the team fell short in the quarterfinals. This setback fuels their determination to succeed this year. They believe their strong chemistry and consistent development are key factors in their undefeated run.
