Just ahead of its release, 66 reviews of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are in, with the film currently holding a 44% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sequel is a slight downgrade from 2023's The Super Mario Bros.
Movie, which earned a 59% score, but it's still better than the 1993 live-action movie's 27%. Despite being bigger, bolder, and galactic, critics are even more divided than ever over Nintendo's new follow-up movie. In ScreenRant's review of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Jordan Williams admits that the "visually stunning animation continues to be a highlight," a sentiment shared by many critics as one of the few positive qualities. However, the sequel endures many of the same issues as Super Mario Bros. Movie, where the storytelling is overstuffed yet rather thin in development. That also happens to be the core criticism in most reviews across outlets. For instance, the one-sided rivalry between Toad and Yoshi"is largely dropped as the action gets going," while new character Rosalina is"largely underutilized" despite being the movie's driving force. Mario also seems to be less of a standout hero, but"Peach’s journey of self-exploration" provides"the emotional core among the good guys." With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie proving to be a"chaotic fun" adaptation with an uneven story, the movie earned a 5 out of 10 stars. The upcoming sequel returns to the beloved Nintendo world, where Mario, Luigi, and Peach embark on a new journey beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. One of the newest threats is Browser Jr., who attempts to free his father from imprisonment, whereas Super Mario Galaxy Movie players like Yoshi and Rosalina make their on-screen debuts. Although the reception is mixed, it's unlikely to hurt the movie's prospects at the box office. Currently, projections show that The Super Mario Galaxy Move could make $180 million or more domestically during its first five days of release. While that is a slight dip from the original movie's $204 million opening, it will still be the best of the year. Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences will likely respond better to the new installment due to the video game nostalgia. The sequel is expanding its world from the video game and introducing fan-favorite characters like Yoshi, as well as multiple bosses from the Super Mario games.
