One of HBO’s best crime thrillers stars Colin Farrell, and the series has only gotten better in the two years since it was released. HBO’s True Detective is one of the best detective dramas of all time, and the cable network has struggled to top this modern masterpiece’s first season in the 12 years since its 2014 release.
Although HBO’s superb crime thriller Task comes close to emulating the season 1 success of True Detective, the show’s own later seasons had a harder time impressing critics. In particular, True Detective’s muddled, bleak, and painfully slow second season stands out as a low point for the series. Fortunately, star Colin Farrell redeemed his role in the show with 2024’s The Penguin. The Penguin Is One of the Best Batman Adaptations Of All Time A spinoff of 2022’s dark blockbuster reboot The Batman, The Penguin starred an almost unrecognizable Farrell as the eponymous mob boss, Oz Cobb. Disfigured and suffering from clubfoot, Farrell’s sympathetic criminal rises to the top of Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of his former boss, Carmine Falcone. However, he has a major contender to compete with. Rom-com mainstay Cristin Miloti is a veritable revelation as The Penguin’s merciless villain, Sofia Gigante, Carmine’s unhinged daughter who emerges from Arkham Asylum to take over her father’s dominance of Gotham’s underbelly. The power struggle between Cobb and Gigante, along with a slew of other slowly unfolding stories, dominates the action of season 1. However, anyone expecting a cartoon-ish return to the world of Tim Burton’s blackly comedic Batman Returns should adjust their expectations before viewing this HBO show. The Penguin is a deadly serious crime drama that treats its characters and their world with grounded, believable brutality, turning Gotham into a bleak, crime-ridden city scape rather than an outlandish setting. The Penguin Would Be A Classic Batman Series Even Without A Second Season Thanks to the show’s gripping storytelling and strong central performances, The Penguin was immediately ranked alongside The Dark Knight and Joker as one of the best Batman adaptations ever. Its acclaim only grew when the show was nominated for 24 Emmys, winning nine, and three Golden Globes, with Farrell winning Best Male Actor in a Limited Series. It is not yet clear whether The Penguin season 2 will happen, and, if it does, when viewers can expect to see the second season come together. However, this isn’t all that important thanks to the satisfying self-contained story of season 1. Even taken on its own, season 1 of HBO’s The Penguin is already easily one of the best crime thriller TV shows of the last decade. 251 9.3/10 9/10 The Penguin 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Crime Drama Release Date 2024 - 2024-00-00 Showrunner Lauren LeFranc Directors Craig Zobel Writers Lauren LeFranc Franchise Batman, DC Elseworlds Cast See All
