Although Paramount’s famous video game adaptation changed a lot of details from its source material, the series still became a fairly fun sci-fi action show in its own regard. It’s not easy to bring a famous video game franchise to life on screen.

The countless early video game movies that earned terrible critical reviews prove this. However, although video game shows like Fallout and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us have since managed to earn critical acclaim, moving to the small screen isn’t always enough to make this task any more achievable. In 2022, Paramount finally released the long-awaited video game adaptation Halo, and the show’s many changes to the game’s lore had fans in uproar. Halo's TV Show Altered So Much From The Video Games Set in the 26th century, 2022’s Halo series focuses its complex story on a war between the United Nations Space Command and the Covenant, an alliance of alien races who are working together to exterminate humanity. The show’s protagonist, Pablo Schreiber’s genetically engineered super soldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, is a member of the Spartan-II unit Silver Team. So far, this might all sound fairly familiar to fans of the games. However, Halo made many changes to the story of the source games, including revealing Master Chief’s face beneath his helmet, adding a human spy for the Covenant, and even creating an entire new timeline so that the show’s events could coexist with the games. It should go without saying that, when a show needs to create a new, parallel canon alongside the games it is based on, the series has clearly strayed fairly far from its source material. However, while a lot of fans were furious at these changes, Halo’s TV adaptation wasn’t a bad show at its core. It Wasn't A Classic, But The Halo TV Show Had A Certain Charm Admittedly, the show certainly left a lot to be desired as a faithful adaptation, but, when treated as its own story, Halo’s Paramount series was a fun watch. With a stellar supporting cast that included the likes of Bokeem Woodbine, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, and Natascha McElhone, and a darker second season that took no prisoners, Halo deserved some praise despite its shortcomings. Unfortunately, the show’s relative merits were thoroughly overshadowed by the controversy over the changes it made to the source games. While this was a shame, the series is still available for Paramount viewers to decide for themselves. Although Halo’s TV series wasn’t as faithful to the lore of the games as many fans may have hoped, the series is still a solid sci-fi action show. 94 9.2/10 6/10 Halo 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action Science Fiction Fantasy Release Date 2022 - 2024 Network Paramount+ Directors Jonathan Liebesman, Craig Zisk, Dennie Gordon, Roel Reiné, Debs Paterson Writers Justine Juel Gillmer Franchise Halo Cast See All
