Nintendo has found a formula for its Mario universe and is sticking to it. In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as in the 2023 film, surprise character cameos, nonstop gags and action, and references to 40 years’ worth of games that fly across the screen at 100 mph take precedence over plot, character development, and pacing.
However, if you’re ready to turn off your brain for a little under two hours and bask in the impressive animation and countless Easter eggs, there’s a lot of fun to be had in this sugar rush of a sequel. The same problems that plagued The Super Mario Bros. Movie remain in Universal’s follow-up, as well as the same merits. There’s a plethora of fan-favorite Mario and Nintendo characters plugged into the story, leaving it stuffed too full to go beyond the surface with most of them. While it rushes through exposition and potentially intriguing dynamics to fit in its gags and growing ensemble, franchise fans who enjoyed the original and just want to see more of their favorite iconography will leave The Super Mario Galaxy Movie itching for a third film. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Fast-Paced, Overstuffed & Thin Where It Matters As promised, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie expands the original’s ensemble by bringing in numerous franchise-favorite heroes, villains, and side characters, cracking Nintendo’s universe wide open. Two new additions drive the film’s overarching plot: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie kicks off by introducing Princess Rosalina reading a story about Princess Peach and Mario to her dozens of Luma children, only to suddenly be kidnapped by Bowser Jr. , who wants to use her cosmic powers. The Lumas soon recruit Peach, Mario, Luigi , Toad , and their newly acquired friend Yoshi to rescue her, while a “rehabilitated” Bowser must choose between the returning heroes or his mini-me son. This set-up opens the door for numerous franchise figures to appear along the way, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s main characters are separated and face minigame-like obstacles on their path to saving Rosalina; Glen Powell’s perfectly cast Fox McCloud enters in a more pivotal role in the narrative as a welcome surprise. The growing cast allows for plenty of fresh dynamics between Nintendo’s iconic characters, but The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hardly allows enough time to capitalize on them. For instance, Yoshi’s arrival creates a one-sided jealous rivalry with Toad, but the recurring humor that could have come from it is largely dropped as the action gets going. The sequel also teases a charming friendship between the optimistic Luigi and manipulative Bowser, but attaches little-to-no stakes to this as new twists are introduced. Arguably the most developed relationship in the movie is that between Bowser and Bowser Jr. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie paints Bowser as a toxic father who instilled values of world domination into his son, and then seemingly abandoned him, leaving Junior with the need to fulfill an evil dream of theirs in order to win Bowser's approval. Of course, while that could have led to more emotional layers in Bowser’s characterization, further depth is largely brushed over in favor of maintaining the villain as the movies’ most consistent source of comic relief. The latter gets more screen time than in the 2023 movie, but that doesn’t go much further beyond getting to see the two brothers as a more prominent pairing. Mario’s lightly examined story continues the slow burn of his romance with Peach, but he’s far less of the standout hero in Galaxy, with Peach’s journey of self-exploration providing the emotional core among the good guys. Though Rosalina, with a fantastic performance by Brie Larson, is the driving force behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s mission, she’s largely underutilized throughout the narrative. She gets a kick-ass opening sequence, but her unique lore comes with a lot of potential that Galaxy barely grazes. However, the film does introduce a major change to her backstory that offers an exciting set-up for a potential third movie to dive deeper into. Nintendo Fans Will Love The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Easter Eggs & Cameos Galore As Galaxy throws balanced pacing to the wind and opts for a high-energy, fast-moving journey instead, franchise references and cameos come and go with just as much speed. For ardent fans, it amounts to the meme of Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the screen for 100 minutes, as familiar and deep-cut characters, locations, objects, musical cues, and icons appear. If it went unused in The Super Mario Bros. Movie's Easter egg-packed runtime, then there are good odds it’ll show up in Galaxy. Much like the first movie, the visually stunning animation continues to be a highlight in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The vibrant, colorful renderings and switches between Illumination's signature style and Nintendo’s iconic 8-bit animation make it easy to stay glued to the screen amid the fast-paced action. ...it works for what it wants to be: an entertaining, nostalgia-filled, comical, visually stunning romp through multiple generations of Mario. Anyone expecting a Pixar-like narrative with moving themes, carefully developed characters, and a memorable story won't find it in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. That isn’t the formula Nintendo is using with these movies, yet it works for what it wants to be: an entertaining, nostalgia-filled, comical, visually stunning romp through multiple generations of Mario.
