Movie lovers all have their favorite camera techniques, from the famous dolly zoom seen in"Jaws" to fast pan shots that give a viewer a sense of the on-screen action across a sizable swath of space. But our favorite filmmaking device nowadays may be the speedy zoom-in that's often seen at the Big Bear bald eagle nest, at least as"Pip Watch" begins.
When this much-anticipated window opens, thousands of viewers around the world remain glued to the nest's livestream, hoping for an extreme close-up look at the eggs and any possible pips. A pip is an early sign that a chick is working to exit an egg, an arduous process that takes time, perseverance, and the extremely handy egg tooth. Now that Pip Watch 2026 has begun for Jackie, Shadow, and their two precious eggs, the deft camera work on view at the lake-close nest, an aerie that is under constant observation by a camera operated remotely by Friends of Big Bear Valley, is winning our admiration. In fact, the cinematic techniques on display via the nest camera are only encouraging our hourly"invest-egg-ations" into whether pips are appearing on the snugly situated shells.Jackie laid her second clutch of 2026 on Feb. 24 and 27, meaning that March 31 is just about the first day that an eaglet or two might emerge from the eggs that have been gracing the nest bowl for since late February. But the window will be open for at least a few days, giving fans plenty of egg close-ups, and eager opportunities to search for pips, as March makes way for April. Of course, those quick peeks at the eggs don't happen too often, as the eggs are usually tucked under either Jackie or Shadow. It is when one of the adult eagles stands, moves, or departs the nest, pausing the brooding process briefly, that the eggs go on glorious view.
